Mobile providers lock away GPS on phones

An interesting NPR story on the power of GPS in mobile phones and why many cell providers lock it away from the users. Still doesn't explain why AT&T use to have the find a friend mode but then got rid of it.

It's been explained to me that when Cingular bought AT&T Wireless, AT&T specific projects and features went on hold while they worked on the merger and started the slow (still ongoing) move of everything over to the Cingular side. So people still on the AT&T service still have it, but those who migrated do not.

A shame too, since it was such a great little tool.
